Some aircraft and the band
Our first meeting in July was the meet at The Royal Oak, Scopwick. Nine Austin’s and a modern. Most of us took the opportunity to eat out, no washing up! Considering it was a Wednesday night the pub was very busy.
Sunday the 12th turned out fine! The forecast had not been good, but for the third time we had dry weather. As before the venue was superb. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to gather together Austin Sevens, vintage aircraft and some very impressive cars from the VSCC. Including several Buggatis.
Though the main aim is to get together and have an enjoyable afternoon we also hoped to raise money for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire air Ambulance. Helicopter attended through the afternoon between being called away, twice, to incidents. That just highlights how important the service is. In the past two Lincolnshire members have been airlifted to hospital
The PWA7C contingent of 40 or so cars set off from The George Hotel, Leadenham at 10.30 for the 30 mile run to the airfield, ‘somewhere in Lincolnshire’. Our usual roadmaps seem to be confused about where David Porter’s road actually is. This makes it difficult to give directions, hence the road run to get us all there on time. While we had our picnic the band entertained us. At 2.30 an aerobatic display was given by a Pitts Special, this being a biplane looks it vaguely similar to a Tiger Moth. It flies very differently. The pilot took the aircraft through a series of loops, rolls and other manoeuvres that I could only marvel at, not name.
Members of David’s flying club escorted parties along the flight line to let us have a closer look at the assembled aircraft. They are all of a similar age to our cars; I know David’s Tiger Moth first flew in 1939. David has very recently completed a complete rebuild of his Tiger, a huge task. Doing everything himself apart from fitting the covering. When asked how he managed to spray the camouflage pattern without leaving a ridge between the colours David Said “I had a spray gun in each hand and did both colours simultaneously” The mind boggles.
Though not finalised yet we expect to be giving a large cheque to the Air Ambulance appeal.
We still have the Joint Group meeting at Wellow, followed by the Rover meeting at East Kirkby to come. August has our BBQ and gathering at the Holocaust Museum we meet there from 10am onwards. Maybe off to a pub for lunch after?
