Lincolnshire July Report

Let me start by saying last months article entitled “ A tribute to the Vintage Austin Register, Ireland Section” was written not by me but by better half Sue. Unfortunately Ed the editor forgot to assign her name.

After the previous two weeks lovely weather storm clouds, thunder and lightning commenced at 6 p.m. on the evening of our visit to Rippingale! The only Austin present was Ed & Di Davies Ruby, however Gerry and Ann Cock did arrive in their recently acquired Morris 1000. Most members made the weather the excuse. My excuse was that after ‘finally’ diagnosing and solving my embarrassing failure to start after last months visit to Newark Air Museum I also noted that the headlight wires into the control unit have been slowly melting! Daytime running only from now on until I get round to fitting a 6v relay.

Wednesday night is pie night at The Bull Inn and it is fair to say we all enjoyed a very hearty meal, followed by dessert. Ed Davies had run off the results of the Le Mans event & given the number of Lincs. members who had been involved we were delighted to hear that the Type 75 had come 16th out of 69 entrants, some of whom were Bentleys! The following Saturday five Austins were proudly displayed at a fundraising fete held at All Saints Primary School, North Hykeham where Gerry & Anne’s grandchildren attend. On Sunday it was a trip to East Kirkby , home of “Just Jane” the Lancaster bomber, for the joint meeting with the Lincs. Rover Group. What a great day, eleven Austins were present, 1 special, 1 Opal, 2 Chummies, 3 Box Saloons, 2 Austin 10’s. & 2 Rubies [ nb. This time it was Ed & Di’s turn to temporarily break down en route! ]. Nick & Margaret Platek came in their XK150 and Chris & Trudi Petty were in their Rover P4. The driver, John Drewery, of one of the box saloons informed us he had taken a video in HD of the Type 75 at Le Mans. He has very kindly agreed to send a copy to Ed Davies. For the first time East Kirkby were running trips around the airfield with a very knowledgeable guide who gave us lots of interesting anecdotal information. I had no idea one thousand acres were compulsory purchased in order to build the airfield, with runway number one being just short of a mile in length. It was the best £2 ride I have had in a very long time

Wednesday July 21st was the joint meeting at Wellow. A lovely sunny evening with almost more Chummies than Box Saloons. Ian Bancroft arrived and immediately put on his Le Mans overalls, and within a few minutes Graham Beckett came roaring it to the car park in the Type 75. The locals were intrigued and showed much interest in our great little cars. I had to leave early because of another engagement and when I put my head in the bar all eyes were glued to Ian’s laptop which was displaying Le Mans.
