Report for October 2009

LINCOLNSHIRE for October

Our first Winter Meeting at Leadenham was a wind up night presented by Ian Bancroft, the well-known restorer of Austin Sevens and wind up gramophones. Ian has an extensive collection of 78rpm records, many of which he had brought with him. Other members had their own favourite records to be played as well. The volume some of these records produce amazes me. The saying “put a sock in it” had real meaning, though in this case we put a duster in the horn to reduce the volume. Our thanks to Ian for a musical and entertaining evening.

The following Saturday was our open day at Graham Becket’s unit at Dunholme. This went very well with some new faces turning up to see our efforts. Our thanks to Graham for letting us use his workshop space and tools. Without these facilities the project would be almost impossible. Thanks also to Anne for the refreshments, they were very well received. This week we will finish off the last of the four bonnet sections, again many thanks to Colin Davis for his metal working skills and tools. We still have a list of bits and pieces we are short of, I will bring this to future meetings in the hope that they can be found in some dark corner of a shed or garage.

A prospective member contacted me recently, he has taken over another members A7 project to build a special. His ideas sound interesting and exciting; he hopes to be with us at our next meeting to pick our brains. Hopefully we will learn more then. Good news also from the magazine Practical Classics (November issue), they have bought two Austin Sevens to restore in 2010. The cars are a 1936 Ruby and a 1934 RP box saloon. With an extensively restored 1927 Chummy fetching £9101 on eBay interest seems to be returning to our little cars. Also in that issue a 1937 Big Seven saloon restored into a doctor’s coupe, not sure about that one.

November 11th is our Quiz night at the George Hotel, Leadenham. 7.30 for 8.00pm we will also have chips I am told! As before this is a light hearted quiz so come along and be amazed at what other members might or might not know. Dianne will have the Christmas Dinner list and menu’s, so be ready to book your place.
