Why do we have BBQ’s in the summer? We know the weather can be unpredictable, either it will be too hot, too wet or too windy. We spent the week looking at the variable forecast for the weekend of the 8th and on the day it was lovely. Fifty plus members and guests gathered in Richard and Maureen Hamilton’s large garden. They have a Ferguson tractor to mow it with. Situated on the busy A17 we had a yellow vested volunteer watching for gaps in the traffic holding a little A7, just to make sure their entry was safe. Many drivers fooled the system by arriving through the back roads.

Our new, large, gazebo/tent was erected along with three other gazebos of various designs, used on the day to provide shade, not protection from rain. Two of our recent BBQ’s have been very, very, wet. Alan Cady and Alec Fairbrother soon had a fire burning in the bbq bin. No easy charcoal for them but a heap of logs. Peter Rowlands set up the bar in anticipation of the rush. Meanwhile the two Maureen’s Sue, Chris, Anne, and Dianne set about laying the tables and preparing the array of salads. During the afternoon some of our members took the opportunity to ride some of Richards other vehicles, pre-war motorcycles. Thanks to Maureen and Richard for the venue and work on the day. Many thanks to the committee and others for helping on the day, or brought salads or puddings, it really is a team effort. A special thanks to the cooks and barman, whose whole afternoon was spent in the service of others.
On Saturday 15th we had arranged to meet at the Holocaust Centre near Laxton in Nottinghamshire. Ten Austin’s and a modern were in place by 10am. A wonderful turnout. Including friends from the Sheffield Group. The Museum is at the heart of the Holocaust Centre. In the same building, but separate is the Journey. This follows the fictional story of Leo Stein, showing how survivors lived through these times. The physical and emotional journeys these children endured are depicted in fine detail. Schoolroom, home, shops and hiding places. All detailed with objects and artefacts belonging to real survivors. After a drink in the café some went around The Journey and others saw the introductory video in the museum. As Margaret Platek who’s idea the visit was, said “this is a challenging subject.” After the visit the general opinion was that the Centre showed what happened and how, without shocking you into insensitivity. I knew a good deal about the Holocaust before visiting the Centre, but they do provide a different perspective. The centre aims to educate and inform school children, about current, (similar), problems in the world so they have an up to date mission.
I can confirm that the Wings and Wheels event at David Porter’s airfield did raise £1500 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Well done all concerned.
For our September meeting we are being given a factory tour of Siemens industrial gas turbines. We will be meeting outside their gate at 7.15pm. Please let me know you are coming as this will speed up the issuing of passes.
As mentioned last month Ian Bancroft has taken on the running of the Butt’s Quarry trial between Christmas and New Year and is looking for volunteers to be marshals etc. Please contact Ian direct.
On the Saturday 17th October we will be holding an open day for members to come and see the work carried out so far on our Trial car project.
